Certain types of mass culture are mutually dependent, they flow into each other, creating a sense of totality. Image of Superman was born in the age of romanticism: Faust, Don Juan, then - in the popular Nietzscheanism of decadent literature of late XIX century. In 1938 Superman was embodied in a comic book, and from the comic goes to animation and movies, and finally-returns to semi-serious literature and countercultural writings such as the graphic novel Watchmen by Alan Moore.
