The totality of mass culture is primarily expressed in the ecstasy of mysticism of the collective, self-sufficient and enjoying its self-identity. In ideological mysticism, society becomes a kind of total "church", consisting of" blessed " chosen ones. The myth of universal equality, of human rights, and so on, belongs to this experience of totality, of globality.
In the new total society mysticism of the collective consists in the collective's worship of itself as a mystical entity. Already in Rousseau's works we find a recipe for self-deification and self-adoration of the crowd in mass plays:
